OMO
VALLEY RESEARCH PROJECT
Social, Biological, & Health Sciences
OVRP AT A GLANCE
We are an interdisciplinary non-profit scientific organization focused on understanding cultural change and diversity in human social organization and behavior and facilitating education, conservation, and philanthropy across southwest Ethiopia. The Omo Valley in southern Ethiopia is an extremely unique region, home to over a dozen ethnic groups with substantial variation in subsistence strategy, social organization, and market integration. We maintain multiple field sites among distinct ethnolinguistic populations and collect longitudinal and comparative data to address questions about human sociality, biology, and health.

SCIENCE
Comparative & longitudinal research
We are creating new paths in interdisciplinary science by building a multi-population, longitudinal database designed to address outstanding questions in behavioral science. The opportunity to learn from diverse, subsistence populations is rapidly diminishing and therefore should be a top scientific priority.

OUTREACH
Capacity building & philanthropy
We strive to contribute to the training of young Ethiopian scholars, develop new collaborations with local researchers and institutions, and offer applied benefits to organizations and communities. By developing longterm relationships with the communities we work with and better understanding their lifeways and priorities, we work to be a meaningful ally in supporting their goals.
